This week has been one of the best weeks I have had in a very long time. I took my last test to become a certified health counselor through Institute of Integrative Nutrition. For the past year I have been studying what the "primary" foods are, how they relate to what we are actually consuming, different dietary theories, what those cravings really mean and how to reduce them, and that not one diet works for everyone, plus more. It has been one of the hardest years of my life, and I am not done yet- however I can work with people!
This is what I have been wanting- but now that I can do it, where do I begin is the question that has been coming to my mind lately. I have a feeling when people begin something new, they often wonder the same thing. But I am serious- where does one begin once they can pursue what they have been wanting to do and studying to do?
Well for starters, whatever it is- finding clients, applying for a job your expertise area- you need to get up and actually make it happen. No one is going to knock on your door and ask you to come work for them. Make some calls, go out to places and talk to the managers/owners. The worst thing that one can say is no- and that is not such a bad thing, it means that you just have to keep on trying. Tell these people why THEY should hire you. What can you offer them? To do this, whether you do cold call or drop by, write a script and go over it. I am not suggesting you read it word for word, I am just suggesting to read and practice what you want to say to people that way it sounds like you know what you are talking about and it will get rid of the nerves people often have when contacting strangers. Lets face it- we all know emails are the easy way out- but DON'T email. People want to hear you and listen to what you have to say. Not read it. It is much easier writing it and hitting the send button because if they don't respond, it is easier for us to read the rejection rather than hearing someone say no.
I am one of those people who emails everyone about everything. I also text people rather than call them. It is what we do in this day and age, but I do have to say it means something on some level for someone to hear about what you have to offer them. I have to take my own advice this time. I hope everyone can do something out of the realm this week!
So as great as this week has been I have to listen to my own advice and step out of my norm and do something different!
